Fire dousing operations after a clash broke out between two groups at Mahal area in Nagpur
Mumbai: A group of Bajrang Dal and Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) members gathered Monday at Chitnis Park Chowk in the Mahal area in Nagpur to protest, demanding the demolition of the 17th-century Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb, just like they did at all other major cities and towns across Maharashtra.
In Nagpur, however, the protest soon went awry. The agitators burnt a ‘chadar (holy cloth)‘ with inscriptions from the Quran, triggering the Muslim community. This ‘chadar’ burning snowballed into violent clashes in Ganeshpeth, Bhagalpur, and Hansapuri, among other parts of Nagpur. The violence left 33 police personnel and five civilians injured, with one civilian admitted to the ICU.
